4. Icon on glass, "The Holy Archangels Michael and Gabriel", attributed to painter Matei Țâmforea, Cârțișoara, 1886, extremely rare collector's item

The icon represents the Holy Archangels Michael and Gabriel, in the heavens, standing on the clouds. They both wear Roman attire. Archangel Michael is holding a sword in his right hand, and a goblet in his left hand. Archangel Gabriel has a sword in his left hand, and scales in his right hand. The composition is bordered by a frame made of stylized flowers and branches, alternatively coloured in red and green, specific exclusively for Ţâmforea. The iconographic theme rendered against a pink background is exquisitely highlighted. During this period, the iconographer painted in pure tones, the tone is not valorised using gradients, and the drawing is made in pen. (M.B.)
