In the center stage, the Virgin Mary is depicted looking sorrowfully at the source of her sadness: a small Christ crucified on the cross. She is clothed in a black maphorion, a symbol of the mourning in her soul. Next to the cross of the Crucifixion, the symbol of the Church and two archangels are present, hovering on clouds, with two angels holding crosses in their hands. The earth is represented by bands of horizontal color, rendered in unconventional tones. The icon is dated and signed, in Cyrillic and Latin characters "1883 Pavel Z". (A.D.)
