189. Icon on Wood, "Saint Sophia - Wisdom of the Lord", Russian School, mid 19th Century, very rare collectible piece

The central figure of the icon is Sophia-Wisdom of the Lord in the form of a winged Angel, sitting on a golden throne. She is dressed in royal clothes and on her head she is wearing a crown. On either side of the throne is the Mother of God and the Holy Evangelist John - on the right, and Saint John the Baptist along with Saint Hierarch Basil - on the left, winged, in devout attitudes, reminiscent of the Deisis icon, of the Righteous Judgment. The Mother of God holds Her Son, in a sphere. Above Wisdom is represented Jesus blessing. In the sky, in the central axis is represented the Throne of Etimasia. On both sides of the throne are three kneeling angels. (M.B.)
