Francisc Șirato's preference of a certain pictorial topic can often be explained by the background and time of his career. If the militant graphics from the beginning of his career explains his place in society, just like his friend Tonitza, the painting created at the peak of maturity can be identified by the above mentioned places or artistic directions. The Dobrogea landscape was a source of inspiration, the hills and bays of Balchik offer the pictorial complexity to create that recognizable cycle of views, while the peasants and their tradition is depicted in the painting of Șirato from the early '20s. Static nature with flowers paintings seem to be the only constant, regardless of the time or active visual source in the artist's work. A subject that falls within the inward painting area, flowers would be painted throughout his career, especially during the peak and in the last period of his career, remaining as an unparalleled pictorial and chromatic landmark in Șirato's career. All his life attracted to the mastery of Stefan Luchian, Șirato sought to "unravel the technical mystery and all the mechanics of Luchian's craft" especially his flower compositions; hence, during the last 20 years of his career, our painter would dedicate himself to some deeply chromatic experiments, in search of a colouristic intensity of the flowers, typical of the specific shine and glaze of Luchian "flowers". The flowers in Șirato's small garden are youth-and-old-age flowers, roses, petunias and tulips, that he regularly continued to paint since 1935.

Research information

During the exhibition "Fr. Șirato - N.N. Tonitza" at Foundation I. Dalles, 3-31 March 1938, Francisc Șirato exhibited three paintings on the subject of daisies: cat. 10, "Cârciumărese" ("Daisies"), col. Mărăcineanu; cat. 19, "Cârciumărese în vas albastru" ("Daisies in a blue vase"), col. Henri Trembisky and cat. 29, "Cârciumărese" ("Daisies"), col. Jacques Bereille. It is very likely that this painting will be among the works of art displayed in the exhibition at that time.
