oil on cardboard, 69.5 x 100 cm, 69,5 × 100 cm, signed bottom right, with red, "Schweitzer-Cumpăna"

In Schweitzer-Cumpăna's compositions, peasants are almost always depicted in natural postures and they don't pose, therefore this fact always translating into a marked authenticity of the captured instant moments. Although his thematic perspective was getting notably broader, his most cherished topics, those related to the countryside, remain constant in his work. As he paints with determination, using dim colours and an abundance of paste, the painter captures the strife of existence as authentically as possible, and expresses it very directly with the aid of his characters, peasants with dignified facial traits and solid postures, whether their attitude is proud or bored. Throughout his artistic activity, Rudolf Schweitzer-Cumpăna painted various aspects of the entire village life, from peasant representations turned typologies, to highly expressive picturesque landscapes, making his presence felt amongst the most important exponents of traditional spirit in Romanian art. Tavern interiors focus on those characters wrapped in musical frenzy, who find delight under the influence of Bacchus. The stern paintbrush strokes show a movement that is typical for the artist, without decorative details, and by using a cool chromatic he captures an intimate, familiar frame, a place where people met and socialised in those days.
