The rich pictorial cycle inspired by the beautiful garden of the Durău Monastery would become an important landmark in the artist's mature work. Although it is a smaller cycle in the economy of his creation, the twilight of life will be furrowed by more and more such compositions. Nicolae Tonitza will now conduct a careful study of nature, giving it instructive attributes. It will be a free study, conducted uninterruptedly since his initiation into art. The bouquets of fertile, multicolored flowers, with impressive chromatic discharges, will illustrate, in turn, carnations, irises, poppies, marigolds, gladioli or roses. Flowers will become the ideal opportunity for externalizing inner emotions, and personal accents will incorporate decorative effects. Although rarely encountered in his work, this type of composition reveals a sparkling coloration, in which the brilliant white and bold iridescences give a new breath. Affinity for Luchian's work will be translated during the journeys made by Tonitza during the summers, into tribute works. Scattered here and there from the first years of exhibition activity, reproduced much more rarely in the catalogs and monographs published until the beginning of the 2000s, the bouquets with wild flowers, or garden flowers remain, every time, a surprising appearance.
