Ștefan Dimitrescu's work is divided between portraits, landscapes or genre scenes. The artist often captures the world of the village or the local color of Dobrogea, portraits of Turks, peasants or workers. In his portraits, he is rather focused on deciphering the complexity of the inner turmoil of his protagonists, giving them neutral or sometimes meditative expressions. The portrait also allows him to impose himself as a draftsman. The sketched characters blend harmoniously with the artist's color decisions. His musical tendencies are transcribed into harmonious color rhythms, with strong accents, in clear contrasts. Through color, Dimitrescu underscores both shade and light, as well as shape and modeling. He also pays special attention to the clothing of his characters and the accessories they receive. The concern for social themes and the undeniable interest in human psychology are noted both in genre scenes or portraits, and in the landscape. The work at hand stands out both through the captivating composition, and through the impressive dimensions on which the painter carried out his creative act. A robust presence, imposing, with well-defined characteristics, the protagonist depicted in traditional costume is found in the center of the work, leaning on a stick, while leaving enough space around him for the unfolding of the landscape. The land formations and muted colors open the ideal frame for outlining the work scene; the few characters in the secondary plan also contribute to the illustration of the subject.
