Research information

Preliminary study for the oil version of the work.

Stefan Dimitrescu possesses an impeccable power of analysis and synthesis at the same time, capturing through the lines that describe faces and silhouettes the humanity and ethnic element of his models. This time, we distinguish the portrait of Victoria Corciov, a former actress of the National Theater in Bucharest. Her roles of composition and color were divided between performances such as "A Day of Rest" by V. Kataev, directed by Sică Alexandrescu, 1949; "The Last Hour" by Mihail Sebastian, directed by Moni Ghelerter in 1953; "The Visit of the Old Lady" by Friedrich Dürrenmatt, directed by Moni Ghelerter in 1963, etc. A vintage photograph reveals Victoria Corciov in the play "Platon Krecet", directed by Alexandru Finți, at the National Theater in Bucharest, in 1954. The present work is a preparatory sketch of the same oil painting, so we can follow the evolution of the subject from the first sketches. We find the protagonist in an elegant posture, due both to the pose and to her jewelry or clothing. Another portrait made by Dimitrescu presents the actress in profile, wearing the same accessories and her hair styled in the same fashion.
