Ciclul "Emigranții" a luat naștere în urma comenzii primite de Nicolae Vermont de la Ministerul Lucrărilor Publice (cca. 1910), ocazie cu care artistul vizitează portul Constanța. Se cunosc schițe și variante ale operei, o acuarelă cu acest subiect regăsindu-se în patrimoniul Muzeului Colecțiilor de Artă.
