The National Order "Star of Romania" is the highest distinction offered by the Romanian state. The oldest national order ("Order of Union") was created in 1864 by Cuza Vodă and awarded at that time in a limited number. The Parliament of Romania and Carol I amend this Order by the law voted on May 10, 1877, along with the proclamation of independence, and renames it the National Order "Star of Romania", at the proposal of Mihail Kogălniceanu. The National Order "Star of Romania" was abolished in 1948 along with the Communist dictatorship and re-established in December 1998. The decoration is in the box for another class of the order.
