Leii de pază chinezeşti, cunoscuţi sub numele de "Câini Foo" în Occident, sunt folosiţi în China ca simbol al puterii încă din antichitate - din timpul dinastiei Han. Statuetele leilor de pază erau amplasate în faţa palatelor, templelor, mormintelor şi instituţiilor guvernamentale, considerându-se că deţineau anumite puteri ce protejau acele construcţii şi pe cei din interiorul lor, iar variantele decorative de mici dimensiuni sunt considerate talismane.
