Vasile Erdeli was a Romanian United Bishop of the Diocese of Oradea Mare in the period 1843–1862. His appointment as bishop of Oradea of the Romanian Church united with Rome took place on June 11, 1843, by the decision of Bishop Ioan Lemeni from Blaj. In the context of his concerns for promoting Romanian culture and language, and with the support of the governor of Hungary, Archduke Albrecht, the establishment of a chair of Romanian language and literature at the University of Budapest was accomplished, starting with the academic year 1862–1863. The holder of this chair was appointed Alexandru Roman (1826–1897), publicist and founding member of the Romanian Academy, who had previously taught Romanian at the Premonstratensian High School in Oradea, from 1850.
