An important chapter in Mützner's creative work is represented by his journey to the East, to Algeria, where he arrived in 1910. Here he enrolled at the Nouvelle Academy of Painting, and in his free time he studied the surroundings. One of the characteristic attributes of this period will be the picturesque element. He will depict and study various human typologies, attitudes and customs of the locals. He will focus mainly on the urban landscape, revealing the pictoriality of the atmosphere through transparent shadows, unusual tones and unique details of the forms. The current work is dated 1929 and is part of the period spent in the East and the landscapes and exotic themes that he will capture and highlight in other works: "Oriental Costume" (1920), "Landscape with Papayas and Mount Temptation" (1934) or " Market in Tunisia (Gabes)" (1921). The choice of a palm garden is not accidental. For Mützner, the East represents not just a geographic space, but a territory of plastic revelation. The intense light, the lush vegetation of the palms offer him the ideal opportunity to explore the vibration of color and atmospheric effects. His searches and studies took him to numerous special places where he had the opportunity to develop, enrich his knowledge and expand his thematic area within his works. The palm trees can be symbolically interpreted as signs of vitality, permanence and fertility. In the oriental imaginary, the palm tree is associated with the oasis, a place of life and regeneration amid aridity. In Mützner's composition, they are not just botanical elements, but rhythmic landmarks that structure the space and give monumentality to the landscape. The garden is not just a landscape study, but a synthesis of Mützner's eastern experience. The scene highlights his ability to transform reality into a poetic vision and to render, through refined plastic means, the deep spirit of the place. (S.S).
