Cu studii inițiale în cadrul Academiei de Arte Frumoase din Roma, pictorul alege calea Parisului în 1936, înscriindu-se la Belle Arte, unde îl va cunoaște pe Andre Devambez, care îi va deveni cel mai important mentor.
