Începând cu 1976 participă la cursurile Institutului de Arte Plastice Nicolae Grigorescu, pe care le va frecventa până în 1980. O primă limpezire a bagajului stilistic se va formula în urma cutremurului din 1977, care va reprezenta un important pas evolutiv. Mândrescu îşi va reconsidera opinia despre figurativ, de atunci fiind încărcat de concreteţe, înţeles şi forţă. Va alterna structurile abstracte cu cele pur formale, iar odată cu ciclul Structurile, acest joc se va înlănţui continuu.
