Undoubtedly the artist most entitled to bear the title of "painter – traveller", Samuel Mützner presented himself in this work with one of the masterpieces of the genre, a landscape from Balchik. All the painter’s trips between 1908 and 1921, including his stay in Giverny, the 3-year trip to the Far East or the years spent in the Americas, constitute a decisive factor in the development of this impressionist language that is revealed to us in the artist’s mature works. The 20s marks important points in Mützner’s career and life, from his marriage to Rodica Maniu, to the discovery of the Balchik. This last biographical component is important not only for this work, but also for defining Mützner as an artist, who truly became a "painter of Balchik" (Viorica Andreescu), constantly returning to the small unusual city until 1939. Interestingly, the attraction to Orientalism – which he assiduously searching for his entire career – is somewhat fading in the case of his paintings made at Balchik, as the landscape gained importance in front of the picturesque, as we can easily see in this work and in the cycle that follows it.
