Research information

The artwork participated in the retrospective exhibition "Nicolae Dărăscu", The R.S.R. Museum of Art, 1966 and is mentioned and reproduced in the exhibition catalogue, at cat. 103.

Having returned from his travels along the Atlantic, the Mediterranean, the Adriatic, with stops in the Kotor Gulf or Dubrovnik, and then at Ghecet, the wandering artist later directed his attention to the picturesque Balchik. He first arrived here in the year 1919, creating a series of landscapes and genre scenes, inspired by the friendly locals. Among the topics that drew his attention were also the old smitheries, coffee shops, fairs, streets, and houses of Dobrogea. The new discoveries made in this new environment brought ample visions regarding the surfaces, which began to be more amply treated. Contained by space and light, the compositions acquire monumental roles, even in the landscape. Colour, a virtue of his creation, receives more muted shades, as the artist gave up on the strongly emphasized contours and shadows. Thus, his palette became brighter, renewing his usual tonalities with the warm ochre of Dobrogea. (G.M.)
