oil on canvas, 100 x 70.5 cm, 100 × 70,5 cm, signed and dated bottom left, with grey, "E. Stoenescu, (1)931"

Having been taught in the workshop of Jean-Paul Laurens (1838-1921), who noticed him during the exhibition held at the Paris Official Salon (1905), the artist Stoenescu remained in his master’s workshop until 1911. During this period, he created superb works, many of which came to be exhibited and awarded at Paris salons. He conducted his creative work mostly in France, where he also garnered most of his success and praise. He organized successive exhibitions, first in Paris, followed by London, New York, Chicago, San Francisco, and Venice. Having a restricted portfolio of themes, focused on portraits, genre scenes, still lifes or flowers, the artist maintained his propensity for a continued naturalistic direction. Among his genres, the one that was nurtured the most was the portrait, where the artist evinced exceptional virtues. His interest in the human face was highlighted as early as in 1913, when his capacity to fathom human nature was displayed in works such as "Portrait of the French Writer A. Rameau", as well as in later works: "Portrait of Professor Jean-Paul Laurens" (1924), "Levasseur" (1926), "Miss Mac’ Connell" (1927), "Mugnier" (1927), "Bedtime Story" (1931), "Child at the Table" (1938), "Breakfast (Elena Gradin)" (1947) et al. (G.M.)
