The Romanian space served as a constant source of inspiration for Nicolae Grigorescu. His interest in the local specifics manifested in capturing reality through the filter of his sensitivity, thus gaining the value of a symbol. Aspects of Romanian life were painted by Grigorescu over nearly 60 years of artistic activity, managing to express through form and color, the image of authentic harmony, specifically Romanian. Starting from the representations of ox carts, to the painting of shepherds or waiting girls, to the landscapes in full nature, Grigorescu fulfilled the qualities of a true master of the matter. These works are also joined by a significant series of portraits. The painter is especially interested in depicting, through a subtle analysis, the psychological traits, creating, in a realistic style, the atmosphere of the spiritual universe of the one being portrayed. For Grigorescu, therefore, these aspects are not only picturesque, but also suitable for a deep human analysis, similar to Rembrandt, whose works he had observed and studied with great interest, during visits to the Louvre Museum in Paris. Thus, he makes meticulous studies, in which Grigorescu insists on the detail of the form.
