Dobrogea will appear in his creation starting with the second half of the '20s, continuing to be a vein of inspiration towards the last years of creation. Concerned with the technique of drawing and coloring, his painting will become a true study, his talent being noticed since the first artistic manifestations. He will stand out through a rich variety in terms of genres tackled, from portraits, genre scenes or landscapes. His creation would therefore reveal a realistic painting, in which he does not hesitate to render bodies touched by the sun or marked by work. In portraits, Ștefan Dimitrescu rather relies on deciphering the complexity of the inner turmoil of his protagonists, giving them neutral or sometimes meditative expressions. The portrait also allows him to impose himself in the posture of a draftsman. The sketched characters intertwine harmoniously with the chromatic decisions of the artist. Through color, Dimitrescu emphasizes both shadow and light, as well as form and modeling. He pays particular attention to the clothing of his characters and the accessories they receive. The concern for social thematics, and the incontestable interest in human psychology are noted both in genre scenes or portraits. His closest friends, the artist will capture them in his oil canvases, as is the case with the Tonitza family (parents or children) or the Teodoreanu family, but the most dear will be the portraits dedicated to his own family, where we often observe his wife, Maria Lebădă and their daughter Margareta Dimitrescu, or their son.
