The artwork belongs to the sculptor's artistic maturity period, especially carried out during the interwar period, between 1920-1930, when Oscar Spathe created compositions inspired by the lives of simple people, from the rural universe and Romanian traditions. In this period, the artist develops a monumental and expressive style, oriented towards the representation of the human figure and work as a symbol of the stability and continuity of the community. The sculpture represents two craftsmen caught in the midst of their activity, in a scene that evokes the importance of work and crafting traditions in the rural environment. The blacksmith had an important role in the village, being the one who made and repaired agricultural tools, horseshoes, or necessary household items. The composition conveys strength and balance through the solid construction of volumes and the posture of the characters. The sculptor accentuates the musculature and energetic gestures, suggesting the intensity of the activity and the direct relationship between man and the processed material. The theme can also be associated with the interwar art interest in representing the worker and the crafting activities. In the same artistic period, Oscar Spathe also created other similar works, inspired by everyday life, from the rural environment or the representation of monumental human figures, such as: "Shepherd with a whistle" located at the George Enescu National Museum; "Romanian Drobant from the 1877-1878 War" located at the King Ferdinand I National Military Museum, "Equestrian Statuette of Carol I," or "Monument of the Heroes of the Independence War in Craiova "(1900). His style is characterized by a solid volume, compositional balance and a concern for the expressiveness of gestures. The artist valorizes the theme of work and human solidarity, turning an ordinary scene into a symbolic image of power and the continuity of rural tradition. (S.S)
