oil on canvas, 81.5 x 65 cm, signed bottom right, in red, "J. Neylies"

At the end of the 20th century, Jean Neylies stepped for the first time into the studio of the French painter Jean-Léon Gérôme as a free and definite listener. Paris also eased the meeting with Gheorghe Marinescu, whom he will frequently illustrate the published works. He will follow him to Bucharest where he will work as a drawer at Pantelimon and Colentina hospitals. He will continue to develop his technique in oil painting as well and will join the artistic movements of the time. He will debut in 1903 with a personal exhibition organised at the Romanian Athenaeum. He will also exhibit, at The Official Salon of Artistic Youth, Living Artists' Official Exhibitions in Bucharest, but also at the Paris Art Salons. His stay in Romania gets him closer to the culture and traditions of the country, the themes which he will adopt and transpose in his work. He paints peasants, shepherds, horas or country scenes. He also excels in the creation of still life. Peonies appear most frequently among the flowers painted by the artist. The decorative element which became leitmotiv in Neylies 's creation enjoys the foreground light and a vivid colour palette that heralds the arrival of the warm season. Painted with Small, quick touch-lines, peonies share the canvas frame with objects such as coffee cups and books.
