Trupele Tratatului de la Varșovia invadau pe 20 august 1968 Cehoslovacia, la ordinul Uniunii Sovietice, pentru a pune capăt reformelor inițiate de liderul Partidului Comunist Cehoslovac, Alexander Dubcek. România a refuzat să participe la această acțiune. Pe 24 august, la Vrsac, în Iugoslavia, avea loc o întâlnire între Iosif Broz Tito, liderul comunist al țării, și Nicolae Ceaușescu, în cadrul căreia s-a adoptat o atitudine comună, de dezavuare, a acțiunii coordonată de sovietici împotriva Cehoslovaciei. Fotoreporterul agenției UPI îi surprindea pe cei doi lideri comuniști în timpul unei pauze.
