Ca proaspăt absolvent şi un savant aspirant, Emil Racoviţă este selectat în 1897, să facă parte dintr-o echipă internaţională ce porneşte într-o expediţie ştiinţifică în Antarctica, la bordul vasului "Belgica". Expediţia a fost condusă de ofiţerul belgian, Adrien de Gerlache, care era de asemenea şi proprietarul vasului "Belgica".
