Prezenta insignă era conferită ofiţerilor de aviaţie încă de la sfârşitul primului Război Mondial. Acest însemn militar şi-a modificat de mai multe ori forma, exemplarul de faţă datând din timpul celei de-a doua domnii a Regelui Mihai I.
De forma vulturului, specific pentru distincţiile militare aviatice, insigna conservă, pe pieptul vulturului, în email, stema Casei Regale.
