pencil on paper, 21 x 30 cm, dated bottom right, with pencil, ''26 Ian. 1966''

At the age of majority, in 1914, the painter Sever Burada was assigned to the Dolj Infantry Regiment nr. 1. In addition to training at the reserve officer training school, Sever Burada continues his artistic manifestations and makes several drawings. In 1916, he is held prisoner in the Haskova camp, Bulgaria. He will be released in 1918. Back home, he will study Fine Arts in Bucharest and Paris and will participate in numerous exhibitions. The outbreak of the Second World War will coincide with the beginning of his exile from the local social-artistic life. In 1943, Sever Burada was sent as a guard to the Vapniarka gulag in Transnistria, a fact that, in 1945, would lead to the artist being accused and arrested for committing war crimes. He will manage, however, to send a last letter to his sister Cornelia, in which he expresses his innocence and declares that everything "is a stage and a revenge". The capital punishment initially attributed to him will gradually turn into life imprisonment, following which Sever Burada will be released in 1960. But this release will coincide with his exclusion from the Unions and Unions of Artists and the deprivation of the right to pension, a punishment to which is also added the prohibition to cite his name and creation. Sever Burada will thus have to lead a precarious life, marked by lack. He will not be able to move to the capital - in the absence of a home and an identity card - so he will be assigned a "compulsory domicile", in Valea Călămătuiului. The present lot brings to our attention the correspondence that the artist receives from his sister, Cornelia, in 1963. The letter confirms, once again, the delicate situation in which the artist was at that time: Cornelia Gociman describes, as well, the difficulties he encountered in her attempt to send a package of food to her brother. A few points regarding the family situation of the brothers are clarified and sincere wishes for a "better and luckier" 1963 are conveyed. Most likely, the daily shortages pushed the down-on-his-luck artist to use every bit of white paper left: this is how the drawing representing Miu is born.
