Silk rugs in Afghanistan are very rare, being woven mainly by Turkmen tribes in the northwest of the country. This is a double niche prayer rug. The niche illustrates a medallion made up of various Turkmen and animal gules, the whole medallion actually representing a tree of life. The tree is flanked by two rows of symbols for fertility and luck.
