In the summer of 1971, the dictator Nicolae Ceaușescu officially visited China and the effects of this visit changed the direction of the domestic policy of the communist regime in Romania, towards establishing a strong cult of personality. Ceaușescu was accompanied by the younger Ion Iliescu and other communist dignitaries. The Romanian delegation was received at the Beijing airport by the Chinese communist prime minister Zhou Enlai.
