Dărăscu preferred studies after nature to academic rules, which is why he travelled to the bright south of France, where he worked for a while in Saint Tropez (1908-1911). It was the period when Dărăscu was becoming familiar with the simultaneous optical contrast practised by the Neo-Impressionists. Following the steps proposed by Signac and Seurat, of the divisionist technique, Dărăscu “exploited” the technique by making numerous watercolour paintings with aquatic motifs and a burst of colours. The biased deformation doubled by the chromatic violence, an echo of Matisse’s art, as well as the reduction of the palette to red, yellow, blue and green, which conveyed, by juxtaposition, chromatic harmonies of great subtlety, are further responsible for the artist’s move towards oil painting.
