Opera a fost pictată în cursul anului 1894, cel mai probabil înainte de plecarea tânărului Octav Băncilă la studii în München. Portretul de față este cel mai timpuriu autoportret realizat de Octav Băncilă.

Recipient of the stipend for studies abroad after graduating from the Iași School of Fine Arts in 1893, Octav Băncilă benefitted from the financial year only a year later, when he enrolled in the Royal Academy of Art in Munich in the autumn of 1894. The Moldavian painter studied alongside Pericle Capidan and Kimon Loghi, who were also accepted at the Bavarian Academy during the same session, on 30 October 1894.
