Count Antole Demidoff (1813-1870) stood out as a notable personality of his era. An encyclopedic spirit, diplomat in the service of the Russian Empire, engineer and explorer, he became well-known in Europe thanks to his works published in France and elsewhere, of which the present one represented the masterpiece of his activity. He organized an exploration expedition of a vast space, composed of 22 researchers (geologists, botanists, engineers, ethnographers) but also illustrative artists, of whom the most valuable was his friend Auguste Raffet, and writers. The results obtained from field observations were published in the pages of this work which enjoyed substantial success in Europe, which led Demidoff to publish several editions, of different formats, of which the present one represents the luxury edition, of large format. The texts are illustrated with engravings made by Raffet. The work includes numerous valuable information about the Romanians from the Principalities or about the Transylvanian space. The present copy has a cardboard binding from the period, with the spine divided into seven registers. In the cartridge at the base is a noble monogram that includes the initials C.F.L.
