The journalist and writer Ion Luca Caragiale (1852-1912) represented one of the most talented writers of the second half of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. A contemporary of Eminescu and Creangă, close to Junimea and Titu Maiorescu, Caragiale remained famous mostly due to his sketches and theater plays, highly appreciated by the wide audience at that time. The given photograph bears the handwritten signature of the writer and the date of February 23, 1901, a time when several of his friends, acquaintances, and collaborators organized a banquet in Bucharest to mark 25 years of his literary and journalistic activity. Among those present were actors, such as Barbu Brezianu, writers and journalists, like Barbu Ștefănescu Delavrancea, Alexandru Vlahuță, or Constantin Mille, politicians, like Take Ionescu, one of the leaders of the Conservative Party which Caragiale was also a part of. On this occasion, some of those present asked the author to autograph the photographic portrait. The photograph is slightly faded due to prolonged exposure to light.
