The 1866-1867 season of the Romanian Theatre from Craiova was taking place in an exceptional period, marked by the arrival of Carol of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen, future King Carol I, on the throne of the United Principates of Moldavia and Wallachia. Most probably, the political circumstances led to the introduction in the theatre's repertoire of several theatre plays dedicated to various kings in history. The theatre was managed by Theodor Teodorini, who was also an actor and a director, and also the father of highly-valued soprano Elena Teodorini.
