71. "The Holy and Godly Evangel", printed on the will of Mihail Grigore Sturdza, Voivode of Moldavia, Iași, 1842, for his establishment in Târgul Mihăileni, with a gold-plated silver lock, decorated with enamel paintings, an exceptional item, yet the enamels require restoration.

The Evangel was printed on the initiative of Moldavia's rightful Prince Mihail Grigore Sturdza (1839-1849) in 1842, for the church that had been established on his Mihăileni estate.
The specimen is an outstanding one and, except for the enamel lockets, very well preserved. The covers are executed in wooden panels covered in dark red velvet, locked in gold-plated silver. The back is also locked in the same manner. The main cover is decorated with a broad frame consisting of stylized plant motifs. The four corners are marked by polychrome enamel lockets, depicting Saints' faces, and in the centre we find a broad oval cartridge surrounded by ray On the fourth cover, one can find the same stylized plant ornament, and in the centre one can see a decorative element depicting the Crucifixion motif. At its base, one can distinguish the coat of arms of the Principality of Moldavia, as well as the Prince's initials. The corners are marked by four support elements, which allow the stabilizing of the Evangel during the sermon. The clutches are made of the same metal and resemble the silhouettes of two saints.
Inside, on the pages' white margins, there are several holographic notes dated 19th and 20th Centuries.

Research information
Between 1839 and 1842, in Târgul MihÄileni, St. Nicholas's Church is being built in stone and bricks, at the expense of Prince Mihail Sturza and Smaranda Vogoride, under the careful guidance of Governor Mihalache Mavrodin. Towards the end of the 1980s, the communist policies regarding the demolition of churches had aggravated and, in the absence of the necessary funds for urgent repairs, the MihÄileÈti parish priest made recourse to the churchgoers' goodwill. One of them granted the church a loan, which the parish priest repaid by offering in exchange a few religious adornments, which he had received as a donation, including the hereby present Evangel. Later on, these objects were inherited by the respective churchgoer's descendants, at the same time with the Evangel's history. The current owner received them from the churchgoer's offspring by purchase, on occasion of the previous owners' emigration (as per the current owner's testimony).
