The volume includes Romanian stories and legends translated into a literary form by Queen Elisabeth of Romania and published in London by E. Mawr in English in 1881. The Queen had collected these stories and legends for her only daughter Marie, who was struck down by scarlet fever at the age of four. The volume is elegantly bound in leather and the cups are each decorated with a border in Romania's national colours. Inside are two period photographs, one of the queen with her facsimile signature, the other of the Curtea de Argeș monastery, and two heliographs inspired by the contents. The borders are golden.
