PROVENANCE

the historic collection of diplomat Viorel Tilea (1896-1972). Member of the great Transylvanian family Rațiu (attested as early as the 14th century), Tilea became an important Romanian diplomat and official in the interwar period. He was a grandson of the politician Dr. Ioan Rațiu (1828-1902) and a relative of the politician Ion Rațiu (1917-2000), becoming a decisive figure of the Romanian political elite in the interwar period. He started his career around World War I, as apprentice to prominent figures including Iuliu Maniu or Alexandru Vaida-Voievod, reaching the apex of his career in the late 1930s. Between 1938 and 1940 he became a plenipotentiary minister in London, effectively the Romanian ambassador in the United Kingdom, his name being related to "Tilea Incident", when he intervened to the Foreign Office (on 16 and 17 March 1939), warning of the danger of a possible aggression of Nazi Germany against Romania. Following this incident, Tilea lost his citizenship in September 1940, when he sought political asylum in the UK. Later, the citizenship restored in the meantime by King Michael was withdrawn by the Communist state, as he was considered an enemy of the state due to his actions in exile (founding member of the Free Romanian Movement).
