Research information

The artwork was part of the exhibition "S. MÃ¼tzner Ã®n colecÈii bucureÈtene" ("S. MÃ¼tzner in Bucharest collections"), The National Museum of Art of Romania, Bucharest, 2001, under the title "Alger". The artwork is reproduced in the monograph "Samuel MÃ¼tzner", Rodica Marian, Antet Publishing House, Bucharest, 2005, at p. 80, under the title "BÄtrÃ¢nÄ cu copil" ("Old woman and a child").

An important chapter in Mützner's work was his journey to the Arab East, to Algiers, where he arrived in 1910. Here he will enrol at the "Academie Nouvelle de Peinture" and in his spare time will study the surroundings. One of the characteristic attributes of this period will be the picturesque element. He will show a keen observational curiosity in the study of human typologies as well as attitudes and habits. Captured with vivacity and sincerity, the motifs will reveal a high level of attention to plastic construction, as well as the architecture of the plans, which will tend towards monumentality. In his wanderings, he will mainly focus on the cityscape, revealing the pictoriality of the atmosphere through transparent shadows, unusual tones, and unusual details of shapes. Within the elaborate compositional ensembles, the characters will be captured in harmonious movements, illustrating a monumentality specific to the spirituality of the place. (G.M.)
