Characterised by the virtuosity of the solitary self-taught artist, Petre Iorgulescu Yor leaves for Paris in 1919, following his decision to give up his magistrate career, in order to study painting. Driven by his desire for a deeper study of as many aesthetic forms as possible, Yor goes through the curricula of several Paris-based art academies. He mainly paints landscape, portraits and still life. Not only is his painting decorative, but he also secures symbols capturing the state of mind or the atmosphere. Inspired by Cézanne's still life paintings, Yor pays particular attention to colour. He is concerned with aggressive contrasts and stern chromatic - a preference for ochre, grey, brown or black. The illustrated shapes are simple, and the lines are clear. The chosen interior is modest, full of apparently everyday items, but which we can easily identify in country houses. For Yor, still life represents a way of perfecting shape and colour, in the attempt to accomplish a work that breaks through the imitation barriers.
