Gheorghe Petrașcu's connection with the fertile cultural environment of France dates back to the late 19th century, when he enrolled as a student at the Julian Academy. It is the period when the painter familiarizes himself with French frenzy and vitality, both in the vibrant environment of Paris and in the Brittany region, in Vitré. The creations inspired by foreign lands will be seconded, during the summer holidays, by the prolific environment of Agapia or Constanța, which in turn will inspire a series of works in the artist's creation. Over the years, Petrașcu will return to Brittany and will take the motives of the city space in his works. The year 1921 is one of the most prolific when we stop at the works made in Vitré. Arrived here after the end of the war, Petrașcu will stop, in turn, in Saint Malo, Saint Enogat or Morlaix. It will be a period rich in trips (between 1921-1936), but not only France will constitute his pictorial universe, but also Italy or Spain. The unique architecture of the houses in the small settlement at the western end of Brittany will constitute a preferred and recurring motif, the series of works, intensely reproduced in volumes dedicated to the artist, attesting to this fact. Petrașcu will be, indirectly, a continuator of Grigorescu in this respect; the master from Câmpina being among the first painters to incorporate the beauty of Brittany in their art. From marine landscapes to genre scenes with many characters, the creations made in France will keep the impatience in front of the motif and the local color of the depicted spaces.
