Addressing themes and subjects with a deeply humanistic charge, Rudolf Schweitzer-Cumpăna inscribes himself in the history of Romanian visual arts as a true painter of the village and the indigenous peasant. The childhood spent in the midst of nature, in the rustic atmosphere of Cumpăna, will translate into a diligent study of the life of the peasants of Argeș. The artist will transcribe faces, ports, gestures and customs in a series of frescoes dedicated to the rural area. Among his favorite themes are motherhood, work and care for the household or domestic work, transcribed into landscapes, portraits or genre scenes. The organic need to express himself in front of the easel manifests itself almost incessantly - the artist working, sometimes, four or five works per day. The tumult and at the same time the tranquility of rural life are painted through his specific plastic language, through means of expression that undoubtedly enrich the artist's themes. Rudolf Schweitzer-Cumpăna uses strong contrasts and bets on the incandescence of color. He transposes his emotional states into intense games of light and shadow and reveals to us the revealing effect of color placed directly on the canvas. He uses a generous, rich paste, which he places in harmonious strokes in fast, well-defined rhythms. He does not idealize the image of the peasant, but presents the simple, ordinary man, with his spiritual troubles and daily concerns. The expressionist dramatism of the artist's chromaticity is accentuated by his realistic vision. The woman caught during housework becomes a motif in his work. Young or old seamstresses, with head scarves and kerchiefs, who move their hands frantically towards the completion of daily activities, become more and more present in the artist's works.
