The first known self-portrait signed by Gheorghe Petrașcu dates back to 1895, when he was a student, and it is a work of pure Grigorescu inspiration, yet relevant to the painting that Petrașcu practiced for a few more years. He was only 23 years old, but the element that became so recognisable later on, the sharp gaze, is present since this early appearance. Eight years later, at his second individual exhibition, Petrașcu came with an impressive series of self-portraits, no less than 20 studies in oil or in pencil being present at the Athenaeum. Over the years, Petraşcu did not give up this method of autobiography and knowledge, painting remarkable works through the severity and depth with which he defined his personality. Even though the painter did not seek to define himself as a local Rembrandt, Petrașcu left us a series of extremely valuable oil paintings that can also help us understand the man behind the painter.
