oil on cardboard, 49 x 60.5 cm, 60,5x49, signed lower left, in black, "TheoSion"

Constanța reoccurred in Theodorescu-Sion’s imagery in the early 1920s, after the seaside town had been crossed and painted during the previous decade. Probably his most important contribution marked the allegoric compositions painted by Sion around 1915-1916, shaped around the myths of Tomis. Actually, there was no connection between the decorative compositions and the city itself, but rather with the mystical atmosphere surrounding the ancient citadel, the sea and Ovidius’ figure. Thus, the painting at hand genuinely provides us with a descriptive composition of a view also found in the painting of Marius Bunescu, much more inclined towards landscaping creation than our painter. The placement of the work in a certain period is implied by both the choice of subject, as the landscape is for Theodorescu-Sion a genre well framed within the pictorial body, and also by the motifs used (woman on landscape) and especially by the manner of painting. Our work, also brimming with the complexity of an elaborate study of nature, finds its finish in the atmosphere discharged into each stroke of colour. The refining of the structural elements of the composition is not achieved by the drawing, but rather by experimenting with the chromatic masses, which, through hard tinges, concentrate matter and the volumes created.
