pastel and charcoal on paper, 87.5 x 125 cm, signed lower right, in blue, "Moscu (Alexandru)"

Alexandru Moscu – a painter trained both in Germany, with Herman Graeber and at the Academy of Art, and at the Fine Arts School in Bucharest, continuing later with a period of studies in Prague – could not escape the phenomenon-praise brought to the grace and beauty of women. A clear example of nude paintings is the present composition, inspired by the classic theme of the woman at the mirror. In this case, a woman whose nude body is of ideal beauty, appears stretched between sheets, with her back to the viewer, slightly twisted to the right. With her right hand she holds a mirror, a symbol of dialogue and invitation to introspection. With his well-known mastery, Moscu revisits the theme of the naked woman at the mirror (Rubens, Titian, Velasquez, Renoir, Manet, Picasso), reinterpreting it. If in the case of Western artists, the theme of the mirror reflecting the unseen part of the woman's body constituted a pretext for rendering, on a two-dimensional surface, two different angles of view (thus rivaling with sculpture), Moscu stops at a more spiritual pictorial vision, where the woman's nudity can be observed only in what the artist decides can be observed, accentuating sensuality only through the sinuous lines of the body, through calm and harmonious volumes and ineffable surfaces of the skin.
