Even though it occupies a well-defined place in his creation, the still life is not one of the most frequently approached genres by Nicolae Dărăscu. Creating a common body alongside the canvases with flowers, we can thus almost always relate the series of still lifes to that of flowers, at least from the point of view of aesthetic characteristics, depending on the period. The mid-1920s and the second half of the 1930s represented the most relevant periods in terms of the recurrence of the theme, but also the common qualities of a coherent plastic body. Just like the rich bouquets of flowers, which live almost exclusively from their coloristic quality, the present still life also complies with the same precept. Considering the composition (typically Cezanne) and the assembly of a specific prop (that of a table) we discover a Dărăscu attracted both by the picturesque culinary, but also by the occasion of typical pictorial interpretations. The assumption of the prop is also plausible, especially if we observe the blue box (sugar bowl), recognizable in the entire series of still lifes (with or without flowers). The typical chromatic (warm colors, strongly emphasized) and the brushwork finely tuned to the main volumes, as well as the specific culinary (the crayfish) justify us to place the canvas in one made in Balcic, in one of the stays of the thirties.
