Known in Iraq under the name Izar-as-Samawa, these blankets were not traded and remained largely unknown to the entire world. In 1991, Saddam Hussein drained the marshes as a punishment for sheltering Shiite rebels. The Marsh Arabs’ culture no longer exists, and the blankets have no longer been made for 30 years. They were produced by sewing together two embroideries, one made by the future bride, and the other half by the groom’s family, following a pre-set pattern. This led to a charming asymmetry, as the different working hands can be distinguished.
