The piece is part of the German anti-Romanian propaganda from World War I, under the conditions in which Romania declared its neutrality in 1914 only to enter the war against Germany in 1916, alongside the Entente Powers. On the front is Buridan's Donkey, a clear reference to Romania's indecision which, according to the German perspective, would finally die just like in the philosophical paradox imagined by the French philosopher Jean Buridan in the middle of the 14th century (a donkey caught between a bucket of water and a pile of hay, undecided what to choose, eventually dies of hunger and thirst).
