DIŢESCU, Ştefan, "Tribute to Theodor Pallady. Commemorative exhibition organized on the occasion of the artist's 100th birthday, (catalog)", MNARSR, 1971 ŞORBAN, Raoul, "Theodor Pallady", Ed. Meridiane, Bucharest, 1968

ulei pe carton, 59 x 72 cm, signed at the bottom right, in red, "Pallady"

Living in modern Paris, between 1917 and 1939, Pallady built his culture and his entire ability to interpret the formal based on the poetic spirit of Baudelaire's writings and the literary and artistic symbolism, a spirit only a cosmopolitan and refined city could have. Thus, we discover the work of the painter during this period, an intimate painting, a poetry of the interior and of the familiar, however, translated antagonistically into works that betray an atmosphere of unease, mysterious in places, even melancholy. This explains the disappearance or rather the rarity of the exterior in Pallady's creation, the landscape being much less approached than the character in the interior or the static nature, environments much more susceptible to an accentuated interpretation of that piece of symbolism. Here, Pallady's spirit intervenes, identifying the familiar space (the mansion, the workshop, the banks of the Seine near his home in Place Dauphine) with the tools that would facilitate its reflection in the pictorial creation. Therefore, the critique has always identified the spirituality with which the preferred themes (static nature and the female character) are approached by Pallady, loaded with a typical, aristocratic lyricism. Pallady's entire mature oeuvre, especially in the case of interiors, reveals a search for intimate, structural relations, molded in a direction and a scenography that preserves the appearances of the natural. The manner thus shaped composed that intimate spirit also recognizable in "Confidences". In this composition we find two coquettish characters on the couch, in a relaxed atmosphere, anchored in a decor specific to Pallady. In the right corner, a specific prop to Pallady's still lifes, takes us into his universe, although less decorative, full of meanings. This composition is abundantly defined by the two models: the pictorial surface is defined by the central action, the chromatic aspect is coordinated by the chromatic palette used, and the essence of the painting is also punctuated by the experiences of the moment between the two characters.
