Ioan I Zápolya was one of the most complex and controversial political figures of Central Europe in the 16th century. Born in 1487 in an influential noble family from Transylvania, he came to play an essential role in the struggle for the crown of Hungary, in a period marked by deep crises, Ottoman invasions, and dynastic rivalries. The importance of Ioan I Zápolya primarily comes from his role as the leader of a Hungarian noble faction who, after the disaster of Mohács in 1526, elected him king of Hungary. His election took place in direct opposition to the election of Ferdinand of Habsburg, triggering a civil conflict and dividing the kingdom into two rival factions. This split marked the beginning of a power duality that would last for several decades and profoundly influence the history of the region. To consolidate his position, Ioan I sought the support of the Ottoman Empire, thus entering a relationship of vassalage to Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent. Although this gesture was perceived by some contemporaries as a betrayal of Christian interests, it was, from Zápolya's perspective, a strategic choice meant to counterbalance the increasing power of the Habsburgs. Through this alliance, he managed to retain control over a considerable part of Hungary, particularly the eastern regions and Transylvania. Ioan I Zápolya also holds particular significance in the history of Transylvania, as his reign prepared the ground for the autonomy of the Principality of Transylvania. After his death in 1540, his son, John Sigismund Zápolya, would become the first prince of Transylvania, leading a region that would enjoy relative independence in the context of Ottoman and Habsburg pressures. Through his actions, Ioan I Zápolya influenced the balance of power in Central Europe, in a period of profound instability. Although he did not manage to completely unify Hungary under his rule, he was a skilled player on the political stage, managing to maintain his authority in an extremely difficult context. Thus, he remains a significant figure in the history of Hungary and Transylvania, a symbol of local resistance in the face of imperial expansion.
