The coin was issued by Mircea the Elder, the most important ruler of Wallachia, who reigned between 1386 and 1418. Known in Romanian numismatics as the Wallachian ducat, it fits into the system of ducats minted in Venice starting in 1202. The engraving of the coin, on both obverse and reverse, follows the common pattern of the Wallachian ducat, used in all issues of the Wallachian lords from Vlaicu I (1364 - 1377) to Basarab Laiotă (1473 - 1477, with frequent interruptions). The legends on Mircea the Elder's coins were written either in Cyrillic characters or in Latin characters.
