The photograph depicts a group of Romanian officers led by General Constantin Boerescu visiting the battlefield of Smârdan in Bulgaria, during the War of Independence. The Romanian officers are alongside Bulgarian officers from the Vidin garrison. On the reverse there is a lengthy handwritten text written by Bulgarian Colonel Deloff, the commander of the Vidin garrison. The photograph is mounted on an original, period cardboard.
